This technique is still being refined, but its goal is simple: to prove that digital stylized semi-realism is not just for trained artists with tablets, but for anyone willing to master the craft, one click at a time.
The Cursor Realism Method
Many digital artists believe that stylized semi-realism cannot be achieved without a tablet or that using a cursor is too limiting. Our Cursor Realism method challenges this notion—not by denying the effort required but by proving that semi-realistic art can be created with just a mouse or trackpad.
Cursor Realism is an accessible and affordable digital art method, making stylized semi-realism achievable for those in low-income communities or with limited mobility. Developed over 12 years, this technique proves that digital artistry is for everyone and about passion—not expensive tools.
Tools needed
You only need a (basic) computer or laptop and Adobe Photoshop access. While Photoshop is industry-standard, more affordable software alternatives like GIMP can be used with this method. Unlike traditional art, it avoids recurring costs for materials, making it a one-time investment with long-term cost efficiency.
How it works
A process of ‘clicking’ your image to semi-life, where all the work is done through index/middle finger movements and minor wrist oscillations.
Uses basic Photoshop tools and (free) downloadable brushes to bring images from the mind’s eye into reality. No plugins.
Who is this for?
The Cursor Realism method is designed for:
✔ Artists who prefer a mouse-based approach over tablet drawing.
✔ Those who cannot afford a tablet but still want to create high-quality digital art.
✔ Traditional artists transitioning into digital art who find tablets overwhelming.
✔ Artists with limited mobility, who may find finger-based movements more accessible than full-arm strokes.
✔ Hobbyists and enthusiasts of techniques in art workflow
